It doesn't seem to be the most active KAL in the world, but I guess the Chuckies aren't the fastest knitting project in the world either.. I cast on about a week ago, and this is how far I've got.

I knew they would be a lot of work when I started, but I didn't think it would be THIS complicated. It's not that the pattern is really difficult, it's just that it takes so much time to move the two yarns around. I know there is a way to do this faster, but at this point, I haven't figured it out...

Still love the socks, though! I wanted to knit them in very bright and contrasting colors, so I chose white as the contrast color and a bright pink/purple-ish variegated yarn as the background color. I really like the way they look. The white yarn is a little bit thicker than the pink one, and that seems to work out great, because the cables are really "popping" out.

Now I'm just waiting to get to the heel flap.. Hopefully that will be a little less complicated...

Once again, a big Hi there to all of you, and I hope I can see more pictures of your work here soon.

Heidi

Yarn Dominance

I have made it to the heel flap! Once I had knit a few rows however, I noticed that I had an issue with yarn dominance. On the first half of the heel flap, I held the brown yarn in my left hand on both the knit and the purl side. For the second half, I held the brown in my left hand only for the purl side, and swapped it to my right hand for the knit side. Can you see the difference? It's subtle, but since this didn't take too long, I think I will frog it back to the cables and re-do.

BTW - I had a problem with a cable crossing at one point, you can see pics and a tutorial of how I "fixed" it here!

Chuck's first sock progress!

I've finally started - Hurray! There have been delays due to finishing the Anemoi Mittens (and their subsequent loss - I was crushed when they disappeared from my desk at work!) the loss of our website and all postings as well (what a week!!) and the build of a new site - check it out at www.purlingplans.com - it's a work in progress and I'm trying to decide how regroup and what, if anything to try to re-post.
Anyway, I was really excited to get started - I’m only 2 repeats into the sock, so I have quite a ways to go. But it is moving alonger faster as I go. I’m finding that cabling without a cable needle is very handy for this project, and actually works out really well with the stranding. I'm working hard at keeping an even tension, something that I struggle with a bit, I'm not very consistent. We'll see how it goes!!

Swatching for Chuck

Hi all - Thanks Bettina for hosting, I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone's progress :) I love this pattern - Eunny's pretty amazing. I have swatched and am ready to go! I'm also working on the Anemoi mittens, you can see my swatch for those on my blog too. These patterns are my first foray into stranded colorwork and I'm so excited. And, this is my first KAL too - Hi to the other new folks too! I learned to knit this summer, so this is going to be a bit of an adventure for me, but I like a challenge. I got my yarn, black for the background and green for the cables. I still need to pick up needles this week.

The next trick is figuring out how to sneak knitting back in with my new class schedule. I am still deliberating the choice of yarn, but mostly because I can not wrap my mind around the 76 stitches we are supposed to cast on. I normally knit my socks with 56 stitches on 2.5mm needles and 20 stitches is quite a difference, even though I know cables and colorwork make it tighter. I am working up to that necessary leap of faith and will likely use smaller needles. Let's see how I like it then.

Karin

Finally got the yarn!

My first post to this KAL, but I've finally gotten the yarn for my Chuck's Cables: I'll be doing them in pink and white, though I am intrigued by the idea of doing them in black (for the cables) and a varigated (for the backround). I may have to do both, just to see how they differ.

Does anyone else find the holidays a good time to knit? Spending time with family, who have long ago ceased to be offended that I'm always doing something with my hands while talking with them. (Wish I could condition the folks at work, like that!) And a lot of football games to watch, which I love, but again, have to be doing something with my hands. (Thank goodness for the instant replay!) So, I'm hoping to get started on the CCS soon.

But first, I have to get through Christmas Day.

Welcome to Karin!

Karin is a new member to our little KAL and has already purchased the yarn for Chuck.
